COMMITMENT TO TRAINING
Training is of paramount importance within the printing
industry and Scanlon Printing Company ensures that all
members of staff are afforded the opportunity and ability
to be multi-skilled and to develop a strong career path
within the Company.
In conjunction with the Queensland School of Printing
and Graphic Arts (QSPGA), Scanlon Printing Company has
been instrumental in creating a “Bridging the
Gap” pilot program through the Board of the QSPGA,
allowing Year 11 and 12 students to complete on-the-job
training. This initiative provides trainees and apprentices
with the definitive platform not only to learn the tools
of the trade but to develop a true passion for the craft
and a real understanding of quality.
ENVIRONMENT
Scanlon Printing Company’s objective
is to exceed the environmental demands made upon us
as a printing company without impairing the performance
of our products or expectations of our clients.
Operating 100% CTP, the need for film and it’s
associated chemistry is eliminated altogether. The benefits
of the process include better print quality, faster
job turnaround, faster press make-readies and a reduction
in energy, chemistry and waste materials.
Traditional printing inks are mineral oil based and
contribute to ever growing greenhouse gas emissions.
The key component of the vegetable based inks used at
Scanlon Printing Company is linseed oil, which is made
from renewable sources such as flax.
Scanlon Printing Company continues to explore ways
to reduce it’s consumption of both water and energy
throughout the entire operation and has undertaken many
measures to reduce such. Natural lighting, reduced usage
of infra red drying units on presses and turning off
computer monitors are just some of the activities that
are undertaken to reduce energy usage.
Significant amounts of paper are purchased from suppliers
that use pulp from sustainable sources such as softwood
regenerated forests grown specifically for paper production,
as opposed to pulp from virgin hardwood timber. From
partly to fully recycled using pre and post consumer
waste, chlorine free and pH neutral or obtained from
sustainable forests, paper comes in many environmentally
responsible forms.
In addition, almost all waste materials generated at
Scanlon Printing Company are recycled and cleanliness
throughout the plant is considered of paramount importance.
